Do You Know How to Properly Calculate Your Zakat? - September 27, 2007 PDF Print E-mail

 

As Salaamu Alaikum (Peace be upon You),

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has enjoined upon rich Muslims a due to be taken from their properties corresponding to the needs of the poor among them. The poor will never suffer from starvation or lack of clothes unless the rich neglect their due. If they do, Allah will surely hold them accountable and punish them severely." (related by At-Tabarani in Al-'Aswat and as-Saghir).

It is a fact that today Muslims all over the world are suffering from starvation, lack of proper education, shelter and clothing.  To find answer to these hard questions, perhaps we should ask ourselves:

   1. If we really understand that Zakat is an obligatory charity - an act of worship - not a tax?
   2. In today's complex financial world, do we know how to correctly calculate Zakat on Stocks, Mutual Funds, Stock Options, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), 401K, IRA, Life Insurance, Jewelry, etc.?
   3. As a result, are we properly paying what is due upon us (Zakat)?

Sitara-e-Isaar Awarded to Hidaya Foundation

The sister organization of Hidaya Trust, Hidaya Foundation was awarded Sitara-i-Eisaar (Star of Sacrifice) by the Government of Pakistan, in recognition of the results-oriented relief efforts of both the organizations during the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.
